A First-Timer's Guide to the Desert Camp

Most of the photographs you have seen are of the dunes. Most of your evening is at the camp. Here is how those three or four hours unfold.

Arrival and the golden hour

You reach camp shortly before sunset, which is deliberate. The first thirty minutes are the best light of the day and the quietest the camp will be — use them for the dune behind the camp rather than queuing for the buffet. Welcome drinks, dates and Arabic coffee are served as you arrive.

The activity ring

Camel rides, sandboarding, henna, falcon handling and the dress-up photo stand all run simultaneously around the camp's edge, included in your package. Queues build after dark, so the order matters: camels and sandboarding first while there is light, henna and shisha once the shows begin.

Dinner

A live-station buffet — grilled meats, biryani, mezze, salads, plus a vegetarian line that is a genuine menu rather than an afterthought. Tell us about allergies or a strict vegan, Jain or gluten-free requirement when you book and the camp kitchen prepares a separate plate.

The shows

Three acts, roughly twenty minutes each: tanoura, where a dancer spins in a weighted skirt for the length of a song without stopping; a fire performance; and belly dance. Sit on the left side facing the stage if you want photographs without the buffet lighting behind your subject.

The lights go down for the last act, and for about ten minutes the desert sky is genuinely dark. Walk fifty metres past the last tent and look up — that, not the dune bashing, is what people remember a year later.
